Ten Years of Commitment To Forge A Dream -- Record of History of China Gas Chongqing Fujiang LNG Fueling Terminal Project

2020.06.19

On 19 June 2020, to the sound of a long whistle, two LNG ships - "New Yangtze River 26007" of China Yangtze River Shipping Group Co. LTD and "Gangsheng 1005" of Chongqing Port Management Group, became the first LNG powered ships to ever pass through the locks of the Three Gorges Dam. This demonstration opens a new chapter for LNG clean energy powered ships on shipping routes along the whole length of the Yangtze River.

Since 2010, to support the national strategic goal of "gasifying the Yangtze River", China Gas Fujiang Company has been actively involved in the commercialisation of fuel to gas conversion of ships on the Yangtze River. In 2012, in cooperation with China Yangtze River Shipping Group Co. LTD, the company successfully converted the Changxun III freighter, and became the first LNG ship in China to receive the dual-fuel ship airworthiness certificate issued by the Maritime Safety Administration. Subsequently, China Gas Group started the construction of three ship filling stations in Chongqing, Ezhou and Taizhou along the upper, middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and took the lead in the investment and construction of Chongqing ship filling station. The company has overcome many difficulties during the construction of the ship filling station as this was the first ship filling station of this type in China and therefore standards and approval processes were still under development. However, with strong determination, Chongqing Fujiang Company completed the construction of Chongqing filling station at the end of 2016, and commenced LNG filling service for ships in November 2019.

With the cooperation and support of Chongqing filling station team, the two LNG powered ships completed their nitrogen purge and pressure tests on the LNG system. After filling LNG, the ship navigation experiment and emergency drill in case of an LNG release were carried out successively. On 12 and 13 June, the two ships docked at Chongqing filling station, completed LNG filling, and set off for Shanghai. The two dual-fuel powered ships passed through the Three Gorges Dam safely and verified the safety and feasibility of the passage through the Three Gorges Dam lock of LNG powered ships. This will help to support the development of LNG fueled shipping vessels in the Yangtze River, and open a new chapter for the green and environmental protection of inland river shipping in China!

After ten years and in the face of many challenges what has not changed is the commitment and determination of the China Gas team. Today's joy is the reward of ten years of hard work. As the initiator and promoter of the Yangtze River clean energy application project, Fortune Oil Group is proud of all those who have worked hard on this project. It takes time to break through the clouds and see the sky and we wish China Gas our congratulations on opening this new chapter in its long voyage.
